Monday, July 7

Today, I had more Chemistry. We did a lab today. It was called the butane lab.
This PDF basically tells you how to do it.

You will need:

  • Lighter
  • Graduated Cylinder
  • Big tub
  • Funnel (we didn't use one, but the PDF did)
  • Water
Instructions
  1. Wash the tub.
  2. Fill the tub with water.
  3. Fill the graduated cylinder with water. Make sure it is completely full.
  4. With your hand covering the top, put graduated cylinder upside-down in the tub. Make sure you have no bubbles at the top.
  5. Measure the temperature of the water.
  6. Put the lighter in the water, take it out, dry it, and find the mass of it.
  7. Put the lighter under the graduated cylinder and press the button to release butane gas into the cylinder. Stop at about 97 mL.
  8. Wait five minutes for the butane to heat to room temperature. Line up the water line of the cylinder with the water line of the tub, and find the volume of butane.
  9. Find the molar mass of butane.
  10. Dispose of butane correctly.
This video also shows the lab.
Weird thing:
