753 BC: Romulus founds Rome (traditional date).
1509: Henry VIII became King of England.
1856: The first rail train to pass over the mighty Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, IL made its journey across a newly completed bridge between the two rail centers.
1910: novelist Mark Twain died at the age of 79. Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, he penned several American classics including "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer."
